Reality Checks That Work
Reality checks are habits you perform during the day to question whether you're dreaming. The goal: when you do them in a dream, the anomalous result triggers lucidity.
Effective Reality Checks
- Nose pinch: Pinch your nose and try to breathe. In dreams, you can often still breathe—impossible in reality
- Finger count: Count your fingers. In dreams, digits often look wrong (extra fingers, fused together)
- Text test: Look at text, look away, look back. In dreams, text often changes or becomes gibberish
- Light switch: Flip a switch. Dream lights often don't behave correctly
Making Them Work
- Do them with intention: Don't just go through the motions. Ask "Am I dreaming?" and genuinely question
- Trigger-based: Tie them to recurring events (every time you see a door, your phone, etc.)
- Consistency: Do at least 10–15 per day. The habit must carry into dreams
